Sewing Expo Review

My daughter and I attended a sewing expo this weekend.  We attended for a few hours on Friday — and most of the day on Saturday.  We had a great time together.

On Friday we went around all the booths and checked out all the nice things to buy.  Lots of new sewing machines have been released.  Machines that practically sew for you!  There is a new top of the line machine from Bernina — that literally threads itself — at a retail price of $12,000 — yes, that is not a typo — $12K.  It was however on special for **only** $9,400 at the show.  Do you believe that actually sold out?

Then there is also a new Disney Sewing/Embrodiery Machine — it has a slightly lower price tag of only $7,000 — LOL.  Seriously, it’s a cool machine … but $7K is a bit steep.  Now this machine nearly DOES sew for you.  It has a ‘camera’ built in — and a large computer-like screen — in which you line up the fabric and press ’start’ and it will honestly keep your fabric straight so you will sew even, straight 5/8 inch seams.  It’s quite amazing!

At any rate, it was nice seeing all the new machines — but I’ve got to say the prices — not only of the machines but everything — seemed awful high and pricey.  At lunch time on Saturday we left the expo and headed over to Joann Fabrics and purchased a ton of stuff for just under $50 since there was a terrific sale on patterns and flannel.  My daughter got enough fabric to make 2 pairs of pjs, 1 pair of capris, a skirt, and a quilt starter kit.  And Joann Fabrics offers a 15% discount on top of all their sales for teachers — and homeschooling parents qualify for the discount!

Tomorrow I will sew!

I’m sitting here with a wild summer storm going on outside — at least it’s not the hurricane Dolly — but it sure does sound wicked. It must be from all the intense heat we’ve been experiencing this week — lots of humidity. If it’s anywhere near as hot tomorrow I am going to hide out in my sewing room and catch up on some unfinished projects. My sewing room is really an old room down in the basement — but it’s a haven for me — and being in the basement way in the back with no windows it is the coolest room in the house! Better than being at the pool!

Sewing Shopping

One thing I forgot to mention in my last post … I’m back in the sewing room, too! And I’m thinking about teaching sewing classes again. I use to teach children’s sewing classes about 15 years ago — but then I had three babies in three years and well, it was just too much to keep up. I love to teach sewing and scheduling the classes after school hours is pretty easy. Now that I have a daughter to help me it’s been a lot of fun. She really enjoys sewing too and it gives us something fun to share. She wants to be my assistant if I start classes again.  We’ve been going through all my ’stash’ in the sewing room — and dreaming of things to make of it all.

Now, if I could just find a nice storage unit to organize all this fabric and sewing notions!
