Pie Eating Contest at Disney

Disney’s Polynesian Resort really did things up for the 4th of July holiday — with games and events throughout the day for kids — old and young alike.

The days started with arts and crafts for the younger kids (any age but mostly geared to 4-7 year old group). The kids decorated a beach ball which they were able to keep to play with on the beach. After the arts and crafts there was a ‘tiki’ mask decorating event — my kids had done this on a previous trip so they did not partake this year. Kids got a chance to paint their very own tiki-mask to take home.

Then – the main event was a pie eating contest. In past years there has been a watermelon eating contest which was always fun. I was amazed this year to see the resort bringing out full-size pies for this contest. They conducted the contest according to age groups with the 6-8 year old going first, 9-11 year olds next, teens and finally adults. It was quite an event to watch. Here are some pictures of my kids — look closely at their faces as they begin to eat this pie — and I’ll continue the story down below.

These were chocolate cream pies — my kids normally enjoy any type of pie and chocolate cream is one of their favorites. However, the white stuff you see there is not whipped cream as you would think — it was more of a marshmallow type cream — which my kids did not like at all — and there was a LOT of it. The last picture above is my youngest and I was truly afraid he would get sick — after a few minutes he just pretended to be eating the pie because he felt too embarrassed to give up the fight in the middle of the contest. LOL

My brother-in-law … on the other hand … well … that’s another post … stay tuned.

Disney World 2008 trip, Part 1

After our nearly 24 hour train adventure we arrived at Disney’s Polynesian Resort at approximately noon on the 30th of June, 2008. Ha…. it was like being back home. This was our ninth stay at the Polynesian Resort and to us it’s like going to the family beach house. There are Disney employees we look forward to seeing each and every year. It’s all good.

We were surprised to find our room was ready even at this early time of the day — usually rooms are not ready until closer to 3 or 4 p.m. We were so glad for this because we were exhausted from the train ride and couldn’t wait to unpack and just lounge at the pool for a while.

We were upgraded to the Hawaii building and in room 1504 — a perfect view of the lagoon and Cinderella’s Castle. We had requested a first floor room and we got it! The kids were able to go right out to the patio and onto the beach to play in the sand — and there was a hammock and swing just a few steps away for my tired husband. Here’s the view from our room:

And our room was filled with the coveted ‘towel animals.’ What are towel animals you are wondering? Housekeeping often arranges towels into animal shapes for the kids — much like shaping balloons into animals shapes — except towels don’t pop! Here’s an example of a few in our room. We had about 8 different towel animals throughout our room and bathroom. That was really cool and the kids got a big kick out of that.

The room was perfect! We quickly unpacked and headed to the pool!

A perfect beginning to our vacation.

In less than 24 hours our family boards the Auto Train DISNEY bound. And by Monday mid-afternoon I hope to be taking in the rays at the Polynesian Resort:

I sooooooo need this vacation. I’m looking forward to some great times at Disney. I’m bringing the laptop along … but of course Disney resorts are noted for their lack of internet access — no wireless at the Polynesian … yet!

I’m hoping to check in mid-week and update everyone on the Auto Train Ride and our arrival at the Polynesian!

Disney ……………. HERE we COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
