First Week Homeschooling

The first week of our homeschooling year is almost over — only 35 more weeks to go — lol.

Seriously now — it’s been a fun week and I’ve enjoyed spending more time with the kids.  It always amazes me how much a summer break helps re-energize everyone — but more importantly, how much a child learns just by being a kid during the summer playing outside, being with friends … and well, just being a kid.  My youngest was really struggling with multiplication tables last year and I thought we’d never get past the 4th grade math book.  Suddenly, this week he has it all together — and is ready for division.  How did that happen?

Anyway…. here a really cute video about homeschooling moms that everyone will enjoy — I’ll need to revisit this video in a few months I’m sure….

School on Monday

The books are unpacked, pencils sharpened, schedules printed, the house somewhat cleaned and decluttered  — it’s back to school for this homeschooling family on Monday.

We’re all a little reluctant to start back up — so, we’re starting with just half days next week to gradually adjust and get into a routine.

I can’t believe how fast the summer has gone by.  The weather has been so nice this summer — hardly any humidity.  In fact, it has felt like September weather for the past few weeks.  I wonder if we’ll have a long fall season?

School’s Out

Last Updated on Monday, 7 April 2008 08:37 Written by lorie Monday, 7 April 2008 08:36

Today is a ‘teacher workday’ in our school district. Of course, we homeschool and often people ask if we follow the same schedule as the public schools. The answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no.

It all depends on what we have going on in our lives and whether or not we are behind schedule. However, the older the kids get the harder it is to avoid taking the same school holidays as the public schools. They see their friends out playing and having fun and do not want to be inside doing school work. Most of the time I’m obliging and will compromise by saying we need to do the ‘basics’ for an hour or two and then they are free to have fun with their friends. I often have my motives too — I ‘am’ a teacher afterall … and need my teacher workday too! LOL
