December Wedding in Disney

We are ‘thinking’ about attending my niece’s wedding in December — which will be in Orlando.  So, I called Disney just to see if they even had any rooms available still.  Surprisingly, there are still plenty of options for reservations under the FREE Dining plan promotion for the week of December 14th.  I was shocked.  I’m wondering if the economy is having a serious affect on Disney’s business.

I wanted something really cheap in case we go to the wedding.  I thought staying off-site might be best and less expensive.  But with the free dining I think staying at one of the value resorts will be even less expensive.  Of course, our decision to go really depends a lot on the economy.   If things don’t improve soon there is no way we’ll spend money to go to this wedding.  I fear we’ll need the money for more urgent things than a few days at Disney.

Kids earning money for Disney trip.

Our kids are getting nervous. Summer vacation is just around the corner and they are scraping their money together and realizing they need to earn more in order to have money to spend at Disney. Every year we try to give them some opportunities to do some chores or something to earn extra money for Disney. They enjoy having their own spending money to do as they please (within reason, of course!). Most of the time it’s just having the freedom to spend money in the game room — or buy whatever they want — even if Mom thinks is impractical.

This year it seems they all need to do more reading. My daughter is really into the Nancy Drew series — I think she is on #50 or so and still has a good 20 books to go. My sons, on the other hand, do not like reading. One has a reading disability — so for him reading is painful — but still something he has to do. My other son just rather be outside playing. Can’t blame them … they’re kids and the weather is great.

We came up with a reading plan for them where they can also earn money for Disney. We’re giving them a penny a page. However, to encourage faster reading and more reading we’re offering a 50 cent bonus per book if you finish it within 3 days. This is working well for my daughter who likes to read. The boys are doing it reluctantly … but at least they are reading. We’re also giving them a few other options like cleaning out weeds in the garden and mowing the lawn.

The funny thing is … today my 9 year old received a credit card application in the mail — and he was the one who went to the mailbox to get the mail. You wouldn’t believe the excitement that was in his eyes as he brought in the mail — first, he had mail — which is exciting in itself for a 9 year old … then he opened it and thought he really did have a credit card (it was one of those fake cards to tempt you and get you to read the letter). Poor thing, was devastated to realize it wasn’t going to happen — and he really does have to earn his vacation money the hard way.
